Douglas Wellington Watt

This is without a doubt the hardest entry I've ever had to write, but I want it on the blog to document it in the blog book for the kids to see what an amazing man their uncle was.  It's been over two months since we lost him and the burn is still there...we can only pray that time truly will heal the hurt and we are trying and trying to take comfort in knowing that he isn't in pain anymore.

Once blogger gets their video upload fixed, I'll add the actual memorial slideshow to the blog, but for now here is the link for the photo slideshow that my brother, Mike, put together for the funeral.  I've watched it a 1000 times and it still gets me.  Rest in Peace, Douglas...we miss you beyond words.

I've always thought that Luke showed some resemblance to Doug...
We looked through countless boxes of photos while I was home and I brought a few favorites back with me.

There were over 50 wonderful comments left on the obituary guest page about Douglas and treasured condolences sent specifically to my parents, Mike and myself and I've included a select few for this post. Thank you for all of the continued prayers. It brings comfort to read all of the wonderful things about him.

From family friends:
Douglas our dear precious child; you may have at one time been told the story that we were there with you and your Mom at three weeks of age as you returned back to Bahrain on that brutally hot day in June 1976 We rubbed your little feet, changed diapers, sang to you and cuddled you to sleep. Our mission was to give every ounce of love we could to you and your Mom until your Dad returned from deployment on board the Middle East Force flagship USS LaSalle; at that young age you were already a traveler, in a strange land, and your destiny was to be one of adventure. Years passed and the Navy pulled both of our families in different directions; but our memories and love of you as the first little treasure in our life has been ever constant. We received the letter from your Mom and Dad yesterday that you have taken another journey. The shock is with us today and with tears it is painfully difficult to write this letter, but we slowly over time accept God's will. As with all angels, you are in a better place and will continue with another adventure. Thank you for your life and the precious gifts you have given all of us. Jennifer and John...God Bless You...we miss you terribly. Our prayers are with you. Mike and Patti

To the Watt Family,
I did not know Doug personally but have grown to know Claudia and in such a short time feel as though she is family here in Germany. I know that the loss of her brother was a shock and a tremendous heartache for her and I am sure for the rest of ya'll. I could never imagine losing a child and I have thought of all of you each day since this great loss. From all the wonderful comments people have offered to share with you about your son/brother it is EVIDENT that he was a wonderful person and what a shame that I missed out on meeting such an amazing individual. I will be thinking of you guys daily and hope that you heal with time and his memories flourish. I will be praying for your family.
With love and special prayers from Germany.

From his childhood friends:
John, Jennifer, Claudia, and Michael I am so sorry for your loss. I first met Doug in Middle school during band. He took me under his wing and helped me since I had no playing ability. We had been friends ever since and got into all kinds of trouble. Doug was a great guy and would help anyone in need. So many memories....

Doug, my heart is broken buddy. I've known you since Plaza, through Mason, Longwood and VCU. The memories we made with Joe on the trips up to FarmVille, on the boat, are amazing ones. I remember the adventures and parties. You will be sorely missed.

My condolences go out to the entire Watt family during this hard time. Doug was a very close friend when we were growing up, and you all opened your home to me so many times that I considered you all as an extended family. Even though I lost contact with him because of his travels, I never stopped thinking about him and what he was doing. Doug will be missed.

From students:
Mr. Watt was an excellent teacher. He taught me civics/ economics class five years ago, and has inspired in me a passion for government and politics that I still have to this day. He made the class very exciting and rewarding. I am glad to have had personally known him and to have had him as a teacher.

Mr. Watt was a good teacher and an even greater man. Not only did he help me with my history, he helped me with my personal issues too. When the other kids would put me down, he was there pick me back up. And for that I'll always be grateful to him. He always had a smile on his face, even when the class gave him a hard time. He was kind and patient with even the most difficult student. He was a son, a colleague, a teacher, but most importantly....a friend. When i read that he was only 36 years old when he died, it got me thinking. We could die at any time. So live life to the fullest, forgive and forget, because life isn't measured by the years lived. But how you lived them. Mr. Watt followed this by traveling and teaching. Goodbye, Mr. Watt...we'll miss you

I just wanted to let you know that I admired and enjoyed teaching with Doug at Tabb Middle School. He was right across the hall from me, and he always was there to help me with my computer problems! He was always so friendly, and I will always remember our "hallway chats" where we were able to solve all our problems! He and I left Tabb the same year, but I will always remember his kindness, his gentle ways, and his humor. My deepest sympathies to you all.
Sincerely,
Suzanne Tompkins
former Spanish teacher

I would like to express my deepest condolences to the Watt family, and tell you that your it was an honor to have worked with your son. No matter how challenging the students were or what the day looked like he could always be seen with a smile on his face, had a kind word for a student, and a positive attitude that went a long way in the classroom. He will missed by many.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Watt,
Please accept my sincere condolences. We never met but Doug spoke of you all often at school and even let me use that huge beautiful photography book of the earth you loaned him, Mr. Watt. He talked about the values you all gave him and about his love for travel and for this country and I'm just so very sorry. He was a great guy and will be sorely missed.

"Thank you for your generosity in opening your home to me. I will surely take you up on your offer one day when circumstances allow. Don't forget that we are meeting in Brazil for FIFA in 2014 - I expect to see you there, buddy!" This is what my friend Doug wrote a couple of months ago. I could say he is one of the kindest persons I've ever met. My condolences to the Watt family. You are in my prayers.
