Daytrip to Sedona

When Leevi and I visited AZ in 2008 (sans kids!) we took the bus tour from our resort to the Grand Canyon...I remember not having too much time to explore before we had to get on the bus to make the drive home, so with so many people in tow this time we opted for something closer and went to Sedona.  I am over the top thrilled that we did....it didn't disappoint!!!!!!!!  With some brief Internet research, I learned that Red Rock Crossing was the place to go.  We literally could have stayed for hours!!!!!!  We hiked a bit to this water crossing and we had to drag the girls away.  It was so refreshing and they had a great time wading, splashing, and skipping throwing rocks!

All of the buttes have names...this is Cathedral Rock
Kailee with Leevi's Aunt, Fancy Nancy and the picture in the bottom right are rock stacks called Carins.  Sometimes they are used as trail markers, but in Sedona, which is known for it's vortex energy, they are stacked during meditation.  The girls, of course, wanted to build one, but they found it way more frustrating than relaxing!  :)

I pulled this from an online source...
"How The Red Rocks Were Created.
In the prehistoric era, the entire Sedona area was covered by a sea of water and the red rock buttes we see today were once sandbars and islands protruding up from bottom of the sea. Over millions of years, the sea receded and layered sediment from volcanic activity was formed. Wind and water erosion created these astoundingly beautiful natural sculptured wonders that are composed of basalt, sandstone and limestone. Ferrous oxide was blended with the sandstone which gives the red rocks their distinctive and brilliant crimson red color."

Below are hiking trails with the names of the buttes and how strenuous the hike is.
More gorgeous buttes...Bell rock is in the middle left and bottom right...
I would highly recommend Sedona to any age range!  We also found the souvenir strip of shops and wandered for an hour or so and also got some yummy ice cream before heading back.
