Rothenburg

Rothenburg is a quaint little town less than two hours from our house and it was well worth the drive. Sarah, Rachael, and I (again without children!!!) walked around, had a yummy lunch, and tried to stay warm! Rothenburg is one of the last well preserved walled cities left in Germany. The original construction of the wall began in 1172 and two towers and an arch still remain to this day!!!

The Schneeballen (snowball)! Of course we had to try one...they were everywhere!

Looking out from the walled city to the out-skirts of Rothenburg

Notice the little blue house built on top of an old tower
One of our favorite parts of the city was the Medieval Crime Museum

Some of the torture and death penalty devices were a little difficult to stomach but we got a good laugh out of the "shaming" punishments.
A shame mask for a gossiper...long tongue and big ears!
Two connected neck violins for quarreling women...they were locked together until they made peace!
More iron shame masks
Chasity belts worn by women when their husband was away (it was for their own protection!) :) Or worn when they travelled alone. A replica of a school house...punishments were a wooden donkey to sit on, a log to kneel on, and the well known knuckle/rear end thrashings
I liked this one...it was a wooden rosary that one would have to wear if they fell asleep in church or skipped church

Oh I did so love your photos of Rothenburg - we were there 3 years ago and LOVED it. The Medieval Museum really is quite something isn't it! Mr B also got a good laugh over the quarreling woman irons, but wanted to test drive the drowning cage for 'witches' on me (just to see if it worked) (he was of course joking).
Lovely blog and lovely to see Germany :)
